Seattle City Council has agreed a $15 minimum wage. This will be the highest minimum wage in the US or Canada. Most minimum wages in Canada are $10, or a bit more.

This historic achievement was the result of a powerful grassroots movement built from below. Even with some corporate loopholes in the deal – which could have been defeated with a stronger movement – the message is clear. We can take on big business and win!

In Seattle alone, raising the minimum wage to $15 will put an additional $3 billion into the pockets of low-wage workers over the next decade.

Socialist Alternative’s campaign, which elected Kshama Sawant to Seattle City Council, forced the political establishment to take $15 seriously and to move.

This victory will inspire workers in the US and Canada that, ‘When we organize we can win!’
